A sale of SR Technics by China’s embattled HNA Group has been on the cards for much of this year, but in an interesting new development Bloomberg has reported that Airbus is among the potential bidders for the MRO provider.
The worldwide MRO market is projected to reach more than $82.5 billion by the end of 2020. North America, Western Europe and Asia-Pacific will generate the majority of the MRO demand value with 25%, 23% and 18% respectively.
The tension between the need to recruit more aircraft mechanics and pressure to keep labor costs low for competitive reasons seems to be strongest in two sectors that already have low pay: independent shops and regional airlines. This tension has been building at ExpressJet, which feeds and is 49% owned by United Airlines.
British Airways (BA) is exploring the idea of using 3D printed parts, printed locally at outstations, to improve schedule reliability and cut logistics-related emissions.
Releasing details of the initiative on Dec. 9, BA said it plans to trial 3D-printing technologies as a follow on from its 100-year anniversary "BA2119: Flight of the Future" program.
